Utica, NY (10/06/2005) - Toddlers experiencing delayed motor function may have difficulty learning to sit. A group of physical therapy students at Utica College is looking for volunteers to participate in a study of how practice can help young children with motor impairments learn to sit independently. Dale Scalise-Smith, associate professor and director of physical therapy at Utica College, said, “This skill is very important for children to master, and researchers believe that repeatedly practicing the same skill will effect the child’s ability to sit unaided.”
The team is looking for children between the ages of 6 to 36 months with delayed motor function. Each child must be unable to sit independently, but have head control while sitting. Each volunteer will receive a free developmental assessment by Utica College physical therapy students, a video of the session, and a small stipend. To sign up or obtain more information, please contact Scalise-Smith, PT, Ph.D., at 792-3376.
The Utica College physical therapy program offers both entry-level graduate and doctoral programs. The graduate level program prepares students for their intended profession by learning via a problem-based format with a strong liberal arts background. The doctoral program allows physical therapy students the opportunity to become licensed practitioners.
