Utica, NY (07/06/2015) - On behalf of Utica College, President Todd S. Hutton would like to congratulate members of the United States Women’s National Soccer Team on their championship victory over Japan in the final game of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Vancouver. The rising success of women’s soccer can be directly correlated to Title IX, a federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination in federally-funded education programs. The law went into full effect in 1978.
“Watching the U.S. take home the Cup was witnessing history. I certainly think the excitement will carry into our upcoming season. Everyone loves to win and be a competitive team. And all it takes is to be on a mission,” said Krystine Alvear, captain of the Utica College women’s soccer team. “I look forward to this season and working hard to earn the E8 title this women's soccer program deserves."
Over the last 11 years, Utica College’s women’s programs have made 11 appearances in the NCAA post-season. UC’s nationally ranked field hockey program has won three straight Empire 8 Conference championships and student-athlete Hannah Mackey was named Empire 8 Woman of the Year, as well as being nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year. The women’s basketball team made two NCAA post-season appearances in recent years and women’s ice hockey made its 13th appearance in the ECAC West conference tournament.
