Platt Named Valedictorian; Bierstine is Salutatorian

Utica, NY (04/27/2015) - Dr. Judith Kirkpatrick, Utica College provost and vice president for academic affairs, has named Jared Platt of Camden, N.Y. as the class of 2015 valedictorian and Colleen Bierstine of Newton, New Jersey as the class of 2015 salutatorian.

Platt, who carries a 4.0 GPA, is an economic crime investigation student with a concentration in fraud detection and prevention and a minor in economics. In 2014, he earned the prestigious Ritchie-Jennings Memorial scholarship award from the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE). The award was presented to only 30 students across the country who display excellence in economic crime academics and extracurricular activities.

Platt is also the recipient of the Martin T. Biegelman Award, presented to a student in the economic crime investigation program and member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, who displays academic excellence and service to the college and community.

Currently, Platt is a student researcher with the Center for Identity Management and Information Protection (CIMIP) at Utica College and volunteers at the Oneida County District Attorney’s Office. He is the vice president of UC’s Organization of Justice Studies Club, a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma’s national honor society, and serves as academic chair and member at large of the UC chapter of Alpha Chi Rho.

Platt is the son of Jeff and Connie Platt of Camden.

Bierstine, a public relations student with a GPA of 3.99, is the creator and entrepreneur behind thesmartcookiecook.com, a food blog with new recipes and cooking ideas that generates more than 1,000 views daily. Bierstine also maintains five social media accounts associated with the blog, and shares her recipes via several monthly media appearances.

A recipient of the Raymond Simon Institute Faculty Award for highest GPA and the Raymond Simon Institute Outstanding Senior Award, Bierstine has experience as the public relations intern at UC for two years and was a member of the UC Student Blog Squad.

Bierstine is the daughter of Bonnie and Donald Bierstine.

Utica College’s undergraduate commencement ceremonies will be held Sunday, May 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. There are 689 undergraduates eligible to participate.
