AEI of UC Presents "In the Crosshairs: Private Gun Ownership"

Panel Discussion to Examine Pros, Cons

Utica, NY (11/19/2013) - The Applied Ethics Institute at Utica College will host a panel discussion, “In the Crosshairs: Private Gun Ownership,” on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. in the Library Concourse on the Utica College campus. The discussion will examine pros and cons of private gun ownership in the United States.

The two speakers of the critical and comparative panel discussion are Jack Weinstein and Timothy Hall, professors who hold opposing views on the philosophized debate.

Weinstein is a professor in the department of philosophy and religion at the University of North Dakota. Hall is an associate professor at Oberlin College in Ohio with interests in ethics, including applied ethics and political philosophy.

Christopher Riddle, assistant professor and chair of philosophy at Utica College and chair of the Applied Ethics Institute, will moderate the discussion.

Professor Weinstein will talk about the reaction to the NRA debate and discuss the ideological nature of the public discourse on gun control. Hall will respond to the claim that owning guns does not reduce crime, and that one does not have the right to own a gun in the name of self-defense.

The Applied Ethics Institute at Utica College was founded in 1986 and has been affiliated with Utica College since 1987. Under its current director, assistant professor and chair of philosophy Christopher Riddle, the Institute promotes public discussion of contemporary issues within the community.
