UC to Host Grand Opening of Nursing Facility in Syracuse
ASDN Program Receives Record Number of Inquiries

Utica, NY (10/01/2013) - The need for professional registered nurses is growing. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in its Employment Projections 2010-2020, employment opportunities are on the rise for registered nurses.Utica College has a new, innovative program that is designed to help answer this need. The Accelerated Second Degree Nursing Program (ASDN) is a 16-month hybrid of online study and hands-on clinical placement experience. The Utica College program is one of the first in New York State to be offered in this hybrid format; the simulation laboratory and testing site is centrally located in Syracuse.
The need for such a program is demonstrated by more than 7,300 inquiries since its inception.
Designed specifically for individuals who have a non-nursing bachelors degree and are seeking a second career in nursing, the program features a new model of teaching and learning. Within the 16 months, students will work toward their baccalaureate degrees by taking theory courses online and performing clinical and lab skills onsite. The in-depth courses offered by the program employ numerous teaching methods, utilizing many multimedia resources, as well as proctored testing on location, to assess the students’ progress.
On Thursday, Oct. 3, the ASDN Program will hold a grand opening for the program’s Syracuse area site. The event will take place from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at 290 Elwood Davis Road on the third floor in Liverpool.
The learning facility in Liverpool is a hub for students to learn and practice key nursing skills throughout their 16-month program. The site is equipped with a simulation lab, with the same medical technology and equipment used in hospitals and other health care settings, as well as instruction rooms, computer areas and a student lounge.
“So far, the program has been very well received,” said Cathy Brownell, chair and associate professor of nursing at UC. The program is currently full with 72 students, Brownell said.
“Because of Utica College’s reputation in higher education and the uniqueness of this program, we draw applicants from all over New York State and even several from other parts of the country,” said Jennifer Hill, site director. “This program is highly competitive and attracts strong academic candidates who will become wonderful additions to the professional nursing community.”
The next term will begin Jan. 6, Hill said, with a cohort of 48 students.
Utica College’s ASDN Program is approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED), regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Learning and is fully accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
Utica College is host to an entire suite of nursing programs including a campus-based undergraduate program, an online RN to BS program and the ASDN program. Students in the various nursing programs at UC have access to several state-of-the-art resources, including the Albert and Gloria Shaheen Nursing Laboratory, which features a fully equipped hospital ward simulation and advanced learning technologies.
