Utica, NY (08/22/2012) - The beginning of the 2012-2013 academic year has arrived as Utica College welcomes both new and returning students for the fall semester.

The start of the new academic year brings forth the annual tradition of the college’s Convocation Ceremony. This year’s ceremony will take place Monday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m.

Just before the ceremony, faculty and new students process from Strebel Gardens to the Clark Athletic Center while the bell atop Bell Hall tolls.

The event, which lasts approximately 50 minutes, serves as a formal introduction for new students and is the official opening of the new academic year.

The convocation address will be delivered by alumna Dorree Gurdak. Gurdak, a 1992 graduate of UC, is senior vice president of Weber Shandwick, one of the world’s leading public relations and communications firms.

“The convocation ceremony is a chance for Utica College’s faculty and staff to welcome new students and wish them the best for years to come,” said Mark Kovacs, director of alumni and parent relations.

Along with current students, the college welcomes approximately 700 new freshmen and transfer students this fall.

All students are welcome to attend the convocation ceremony, which is followed by a barbecue in the academic quad.

Classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 28.
