Utica, NY (02/27/2012) - Dr. Meika Loe, associate professor of sociology and women’s studies at Colgate University, will be the keynote speaker at the “In Celebration of Women” luncheon on Monday, March 5 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Library Concourse.  Loe, who is also director of the university’s women’s studies program at Colgate, will visit UC after attending a session of the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, and will include information about the meeting in her keynote presentation, “Rural Women’s Issues: Local and Global.”

The Dr. K. Della Ferguson Womyn’s Resource Center at UC will sponsor the luncheon, celebrating the accomplishments, challenges, and history of women throughout the month of March to coincide with National Women’s History Month.  This year’s national theme is “Women’s Education, Women’s Empowerment.”

Loe’s research has been featured on National Public Radio, and she has been a featured speaker at international sociology conferences, community meetings on aging, continuing education forums, and on various college campuses.  Loe has recently been appointed the interim director of the Upstate Institute, which brings Colgate and the regional area together to engage students, faculty, staff and residents in research that will enhance the area and sustain the environment.  Her latest book, Aging Our Way: Lessons for Living from 85 and Beyond, was published in October 2011.

The luncheon is open to the community, but reservations are required by Wednesday, Feb. 29.  The cost is $10 per person (free to current UC students).

For more information or to make reservations, contact Alane Varga, dean of students, in the office of student affairs at 315-792-3100 or Amy Rivera in the Womyn’s Resource Center at 315-792-3327.
