Utica, NY (03/08/2011) - The American Heart Association recognizes that Utica College has heart. In particular, it has recognized college employees for their efforts in making UC a “Fit-Friendly” place to work.

Linda Lane, corporate events director at the American Heart Association, presented Utica College’s President Todd S. Hutton with a plaque March 4 during the Health and Fitness Expo signifying UC’s status as a Gold Start! Fit-Friendly Company.

UC was one of six companies honored with “gold” status and one of 10 companies in the area named as a Start! Fit-Friendly company by the American Heart Association.
This honor is presented to companies that provide their employees with programs that promote physical activity and healthy living in the workplace.

“It’s a great benefit to Utica College because it allows them to demonstrate that they care about their employees and they have programs in place to have their employees become healthier and live a healthier lifestyle,” Lane said.

Start! Fit-Friendly Companies can reach gold status by providing employees with various activities to encourage physical activity, nutrition and cultural enhancements such as on-site walking routes, healthy food choices in cafeterias and vending machines, annual employee health risk assessments and online tracking tools.

Hutton said that the award is a great recognition, and especially thanked the Wellness Committee—Rebecca Sullivan, Lauren Partyka, Stephanie Weishaupt, and Aundrea Dorie—for all their hard work.

“The college is committed to helping people to be healthy,” he said. “We’re lifelong learners…and part of that is learning how to live in healthy ways. I think it’s just terrific.”
