Utica, NY (11/18/2009) - A little help is on the way for those who want to quit the habit – smoking, that is.The Inter-Greek Council at Utica College, in cooperation with the American Cancer Society and Faxton-St. Luke Healthcare’s “Colleges for Change” program, brings the Great American Smokeout to campus this Thursday to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking. To help make the event a success, educational programs, raffles and giveaways will be offered to attendees, and KISS-FM will provide live music for the event.
The Great American Smokeout encourages smokers to give up their habit, helping them to make plans to quit smoking, or to simply quit smoking on that day. During the event, computers will be already logged on to a website dedicated to the cessation of smoking, helping attendees by offering information and assistance. In addition, interested individuals can get two weeks of nicotine therapy to help them quit.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 440,000 people die each year because of tobacco-related illnesses in the U.S. alone; another 8.6 million have a serious illness caused by smoking.
The Great American Smokeout will be held on Thursday, Nov. 19, from noon until 3 p.m. in the Ellen Knower Clarke Lounge, Strebel Student Center. It is free and open to all students, faculty, and the public. For more information, contact Maureen Murphy, assistant director of student activities, at mrmurphy@utica.edu.
