Utica, NY (05/20/2008) - Utica College and its department of economic crime and justice studies today hosted the annual Oneida County Law Enforcement Coalition Awards Program during which nine officers were honored for outstanding service and valor.Keynote speaker Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente lauded the award winners for keeping the area safe. He reminisced about growing up in East Utica at a time when the local police force knew all the kids in his neighborhood by name. But he went on to caution that times have changed and law enforcement now face more challenging times and ever-more dangerous criminals.
The Coalition’s Outstanding Service Awards were presented to New York State Trooper Arthur Ellis and Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeffery Burkhart. Police officer Jennifer Asker of the Oneida Indian Nation Police received a Valor Award for her cool-headed response to an armed robbery in progress near the Turning Stone Casino. Valor awards were also given to Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Stockhauser, New York State Trooper Michael Benedetto, New York State Trooper Christopher Tanoury, Lewis County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Carpinelli, Boonville Patrolman Charlie Parkosowich and Boonville Investigator Stephen Klein. They were honored for their diligent police work in locating a gunshot victim and her assailant.
Todd S. Hutton, president of Utica College, welcomed the group and spoke of the importance of the criminal justice and related programs at the college. He also discussed the construction of the second phase of the science and technology complex, which will house UC’s economic crime and justice studies programs, as well as the Center for Identity Management and Information Protection (CIMIP). The building is expected to be completed by year’s end.
