Utica, NY (04/26/2007) - The 2007 American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Carski Foundation Distinguished Teaching award will be presented to Lawrence R. Aaronson, Ph.D., dean of arts and sciences and professor of biology at Utica College.

Aaronson was nominated for the award by one of his research students, Ewa Szymanska. “Students are the number one priority in Dr. Aaronson’s life,” Szymanska said.

Aaronson joined the Utica College faculty in 1987, becoming dean of arts and sciences in 2000. He has received numerous awards including the National Alumni Council’s faculty honoree and the Utica College Distinguished Teaching award in 1996. Aaronson serves on the ASM Committee on Undergraduate Education and is coordinator of the ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program.

A post-doctoral fellow in human genetics at Yale School of Medicine, Aaronson holds a Ph.D. in microbiology from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in biological science from Florida State University.

The Carski Foundation Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award honors an educator for outstanding teaching of microbiology to undergraduate students and for encouraging them to subsequent achievement. Aaronson will be presented with the award, which includes a cash prize and commemorative piece, at the ASM general meeting awards dinner in Toronto in May. Aaronson will also be a keynote speaker at the meeting.

With some 43,000 members throughout the world, the ASM works to advance the microbiological sciences and promotes the use of scientific knowledge for improved health and economic and environmental well-being.
