Utica, NY (03/08/2007) - There will be a special conference devoted to helping individuals better understand loss and grief.

The conference, Understanding Bereavement: Acknowledging Loss and Supporting Families, is geared toward community members, professionals and healthcare staff. It will take place on Friday, March 30 in the library concourse at Utica College from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The conference is presented by the Utica College Child Life Society and the All Inclusive Care for Children Coalition, a group of community agencies that provide access to all-inclusive care and services to children facing chronic or life-threatening illness. The day-long event is sponsored by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, Utica College student senate, Hospice and Palliative Care, New York State Center for Sudden Infant Death, and the Greater Upstate New York Chapter of the Association of Death Education and Counseling.

The first speaker, Lois Pearson, is a certified child life specialist in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. With more than 20 years of experience in child life, she has written and lectured about the psychosocial needs of children across the healthcare continuum.

The second speaker, Paul Alexander, LCSW-R, is a psychotherapist and singer/songwriter, who has worked with terminally ill children and their families for more than a decade. Alexander’s experience as a hospice social worker and bereavement coordinator, coupled with his training in music therapy, hypnotherapy and guided imagery, have assisted him in helping individuals face grief.

UC will award .65 Continuing Education Units (CEU) for the successful completion of the program. The conference costs $25. The deadline for registration and payment is March 16.
