Utica, NY (12/21/2006) - It was not just your average bake sale on campus.

Students took time off from studying for finals and finishing term papers to bake cookies, brownies and other goodies for their friend and fellow student Chantell Mallory, the 23-year-old nursing student, mother of twin toddler boys and cancer patient.

Faculty and staff waited tables during the college’s annual dinner earlier this month, netting “tips” to be donated to Mallory. Other collections, the sale of holiday gifts, pink bracelets, and raffles around campus – along with a donation from members of the UC football team – have brought the college’s efforts on behalf of Mallory to close to $4,000 to date.

In addition, UC staff also chose to aid Pfc. Steven Smith, who just returned from Iraq. An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) critically injured the 18-year-old Brookfield native, causing him to lose both legs. Proceeds from the board of trustees’ party for faculty and staff went to Smith.

In the new year, although the holidays will be but a memory, the spirit of giving will continue, as several more fundraising events are planned.
