Q&A WITH AMARI ABRAHAM
Student Ambassador
Major: Sociology
Hometown: Queens, NY
Why did you choose Utica College?
I chose Utica College because out of all the schools I was looking to transfer to, Utica college seemed like the best fit for me. The interest the college took in me getting situated and comfortable with everything was very helpful and me confident in my choice.
What activities are you involved with at Utica College?
I play football here at Utica. I also participate in intramural sports on campus such as volleyball and soccer.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is either the Strebel Dining Hall or the Todd & Jenn Hutton sports and recreation center. I love the dining hall for the obvious reason that I love food but also because the environment of the dining hall is comforting. Sometimes I can go in there between classes and just hangout because of how comforting it is. As for the Todd & Jenn Hutton sports and recreation center (AKA the "dome"), walking in there never gets old. The dome has the best equipment out there and working out or practicing there is an experience in it of itself. It's one of the most unique things on campus by far.
What is the best thing about your major?
I think the best thing about my major is how sometimes you have to think deeper to get an answer or to understand a concept. Sociology is the science of people and although you may think you know people well, sociology teaches you that you really don't know a whole lot. As for the sociology personnel on campus, I think sociology has experienced professors who care about our futures in the sociology field.
What has been the best surprise about being a UC student?
The biggest surprise for me was the class size. Me being a transfer student, I didn't have all the information on the school so I had my own expectations and stereotypes about college that i fell back on. But I was pleased to see that class sizes were relatively smaller than what I expected and that's a positive thing. The smaller class sizes help students stay engaged with the teacher and they can get 1 on 1 help if need be.
How has Utica College prepared you for your future career?
Utica College has prepared me for the future by forcing me to challenge myself academically and physically. I think to succeed, we all have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable and Utica has required that of me in way. I'm taking classes I would have never thought I'd be interested in and doing activities I'd never thought I'd do but I know it's bettering me for the future.
What is something you wish you knew before starting college?
Before starting college, I wish I knew how much I would have to leave my old ways behind to succeed. Over the last 3-4 years, I've had to ditch my old ways of studying, learning, working out etc, to succeed in the classroom and on the field. We all become accustomed to our own ways of doing things to get through high school but college and real life are different. College kind of forced me to change my ways or else I would fail.
One piece of advice for prospective students is…
My piece of advice to a prospective student would be to prepare themselves for change and to get comfortable with it. Everyone may have a idea of how college is going to go but I can assure you that college will never go that way. You may have to stop talking to that one complacent friend, or take up a new major because you found a new interest. You may even have to change the way you learn/study because your way isn't getting you the grades you want. Become comfortable with change because life after you graduate high school will be filled with plenty of changes.

Q&A WITH GABRIELLE DEROCHER
Student Ambassador
Major: Psychology
Hometown: Middleburg, NY
Why did you choose Utica College?
I chose Utica College because as soon as I came to campus I felt welcomed, everyone I saw on campus just seemed very positive and happy to be there. I came from a small town school where I had the largest graduating class and we didn't even break 100, so knowing that at Utica College I would be known by my professors and I would be able to have real connections with those around me, was really comforting.
What activities are you involved with at Utica College?
Some of the activities that I am involved with at Utica College include, Residence Hall Association, The Honors Program, Theta Phi Alpha and Orientation Mentor.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is the library because at first as a first year I was terrified to go in there my first couple of weeks because it just seemed so big, then when I actually went I ended up loving it. I love being able to do work with friends and study with friends on the first floor and then as soon as I knew I had to focus and get things done I would just walk upstairs where I can't socialize with anyone and just get to work. The library just gives a sense of comfort to me like home.
What is the best thing about your major?
The best thing about my major, I would say is the faculty. The psychology professors here are so welcoming and very personable. I always know that if I need anything, even if it isn't just about my major, I can go to them and ask for help and they would be willing to help me. With this support come lifelong connections and although I am only a third year student, I know that even after I leave here I will stay in contact with many of the faculty and staff here on campus.
How has Utica College prepared you for your future career?
Utica College has prepared me for the future by allowing me to gain responsibility and experiences from the beginning of my time here. As a first year student they really push you to get involved and get out of your comfort zone by joining clubs and talking to people we may not know which then helps us in our years to come. By joining these clubs and pushing us to talk to those around us, they have allowed us to make connections to the workforce and things that I thought wouldn't happen until graduate school like doing clinical research.

Why did you choose Utica College?
I chose Utica College for two main reasons. The first is the six year accelerated doctorate of physical therapy program. Between the program, the faculty, and the incredible lab and class rooms, I was blown away. The second reason I chose UC was because of the community I instantly felt here. I could tell how connected the students were with each other, the professors, and the faculty. This is the exact type of family I knew that I needed since I would be so far from home.
What activities are you involved with at Utica College?
I am a part of multiple organizations at Utica College. I am in the dance company and we have performed at various events and even competed for the first time last year. I am also in the health studies student society, which has provided me with numerous opportunities to shadow physical therapists and other resume builders. Lastly, I am in Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, which has connected me to volunteer and scholarship opportunities.

What is the best thing about your major?
The best thing about my major of physical therapy is the family of students it creates. We all get very close since we’re all in the same classes and help each other study. I also love that we are going into a profession that is going to help a lot of people. When I was in physical therapy, my therapist made a huge difference in my life and I cannot wait to be able to pass that on to my future patients.

The best surprise for me about being a UC student has been the close relationships I have been able to form with my professors. My first year here I took chemistry and was really struggling. One piece of advice for prospective students is…
My best advice to a prospective student is to be outgoing and let go of previous restraints you may have placed on yourself. Especially in the beginning, college is an incredible opportunity to reinvent yourself, figure out who you truly want to be and what you want to do. You can join new organizations, explore new interests, and meet people from different backgrounds. Everyone is in the same boat and it can be a beautiful opportunity to grow and learn together if you allow that to happen.
