OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: This is an introductory statistics course and we will study the basic concepts of statistics. Statistical methodology is an important component of scientific reasoning. It is now integral to such fields as engineering, education, agriculture, business, biology, medicine, fishery, management, communications, and psychology and on and on.
COURSE OUTLINE: In this course we will cover the following topics: Descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, measures of central tendency, probability theory, binomial distribution, normal distribution, hypotheses testing. Confidence intervals, correlation and predictionCOURSE LEARNING GOALS: In accordance to the learning goals of the Department of Mathematics of Utica College, MAT 112 will introduce and reinforce students' ability of formulating and solving mathematical and statistical problems.
ATTENDANCE: In a mathematics course, attendance is very important, and each lecture builds on the previous lecture. You are to attend all classes. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed. The final grade in this course will be reduced by a letter if one is absent more than twice. Please let me know if you have any excused absences. Come to class few minutes before the class starts.

HOMEWORK: You will be expected to do the problems and exercises soon after the material is covered in the lecture. The problems are the key to mastering the course. Please, DO THEM. Homework assignments must be neatly written with all details. This will be a gateway test and it allows you to have a PASSPORT to take in class tests.
EXAMS: There will be three tests and a comprehensive final exam, to see that you are keeping up with the work. The final exam will cover the entire course. In general I do not give makeup tests (except under some extraordinary conditions and with my prior approval) but I drop the lowest or missing test except for the final exam. For three in class tests, you need a passport by passing the gateway tests which are solving the homework problems.
