UC Hosts International Human Rights Education Consortium Forum
Meeting to Determine Future Site

Human rights educators from all over the world to gather in Utica Friday

Utica, NY (10/09/2008) - Utica College will host a meeting of the International Human Rights Education Consortium this Friday, October 10. The meeting will consider the future location of the IHREC secretariat position.Educators in human rights created the consortium, of which Utica College was a founding member, in 2000 to foster collaboration, develop curriculum, educate and train professionals in the field, and to support and prepare educators at all levels.
In June 2005, Utica College’s Theodore Orlin, Harold T. Clark Professor of Human Rights Scholarship and Advocacy, was elected president of the International Human Rights Education Consortium, moving the IHREC’s secretariat to Utica College for the following four years.
President Orlin describes the IHREC as "a group of human rights educators joining together in a concerted effort to bring the human rights message to peoples around the globe."
Attending the meeting are: Orlin; Professor Allwyn D’Silva, Justice and Peace Commission, St. Pius College, Mumbai, India; Dr. Liam Gearon, Roehampton University, UK; Professor Mab Huang, Chang Fo-Chuan Center for the Study of Human Rights, Soochow University, Taiwan; Professor Rita Maran, University of California (Berkeley); Michael McGowan, Atlantic Human Rights Centre, St. Thomas University, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada; Reetta Toivanen, Institute for Human Rights, Abo Akademi University, Helsinki, Finland; and Bert Lockwood, Chairman of Human Rights Quarterly, University of Cincinnati.
