About Requesting and Working With an Individual Peer Tutor

Before requesting a peer tutor, it is strongly encouraged that you meet with your professor to discuss your progress in the class. Your professor will be able to offer suggestions for improvement so that you can get the most out of your tutoring sessions!

Check your course syllabus for your professor's office hours and plan to attend
weekly, especially if you are struggling in the class.

Individual Peer Tutoring is free of charge to all Utica College undergraduate students.

Graduate Students

For first year graduate courses, peer tutors are provided when a qualified current student can be recruited, hired and trained. For upper level graduate courses, every attempt is made to find a tutor however it is likely that all qualified students will have graduated from Utica College.

About Individual Peer Tutoring

Tutees must request a tutor for each course separately.

Once matched, the tutor will contact the tutee within 48 hours of assignment to set up a meeting time.

The tutor and the tutee are required to meet on a weekly basis in order to continue the tutoring assignment. If the tutee determines that he/she no longer needs weekly meetings, he/she will be directed to other campus tutoring resources.

Cancelling Sessions: If a tutee needs to cancel a session, he/she must cancel it by 5:00pm the day before the session is scheduled to take place by emailing his/her tutor directly and copying on the email.

If the tutee misses or cancels too many sessions, he/she may be ineligible for tutoring in that course for the remainder of the semester.

Online Students: Online students who cannot meet at the UC Main Campus for tutoring should email to discuss your tutor request(s).

Peer Tutor Request Requirement: All students requesting a peer tutor will be required to complete this activity before they will be assigned a peer tutor. Students are encouraged to complete this before submitting their request for a peer tutor.

Want to request a specific tutor? In the comments section of the Tutor Request Form, please include the name of the tutor you would like to request. Every attempt will be made to match you up with the tutor you have requested.

How do I get a tutor?

In the left hand column of this Tutoring Section, under Tutee Resources, click on Request a Tutor. After completed, the form will be directly sent to the coordinator.

When should I fill out a tutor request?

Students should be pro-active; come in before you need the help. A tutor request will generate a search for a tutor if there is not one already for the requested class. So, the earlier you request a tutor, the shorter you will wait.

How long do I have to wait before I can get a tutor?

Requests are filled depending on the availability of tutors and every attempt is made to assign tutors as quickly as possible. Students requesting tutors should allow a minimum of two weeks before inquiring about the status of their request.

Can I get a tutor for all of my course?

Yes, a student may request as many tutors as they need.

How much does tutoring cost?

Tutoring is free for all UC students.

Are there tutors for every subject?

The tutoring department attempts to hire tutors for a variety of classes. In the even that we do not have a tutor for a requested class, we will try to recruit one for you.

What should I bring to a tutoring session?

You should bring all the materials with you to a session that you bring to class. The more resources you have with you, the more you will get out of the session. Remember, the tutor is not required to bring any materials with them.

If I am late, will the tutor wait for me?

Tutors are asked to wait 15 minutes for you to show up. If you are running late you should call your tutor to let them know.

What should I do if I need to miss a tutoring session?

If you know that you are going to miss a tutoring session in advance you should contact your tutor. Either send an email, or call if it is less than 24 hours in advance.

What should I do if I need help in between sessions with my tutor?

When your tutor is not available and you need help you can visit the Tutor Table, Math & Science Center or the Writing Center in the UC library. Tutors are there to help students at any time throughout the day. Also, your professor is a good resource for help.
