Utica College to Offer ‘English for Healthcare’ Course

Utica College will offer a specialized ‘English for Healthcare’ course to assist those currently working or aspiring to work in the healthcare field. The college’s new offer will combine healthcare related vocabulary, grammar and communication skills into an accelerated 15-module course offered entirely online.
The new class places focus on relevant topics that reflect daily healthcare interactions including patient history, insurance, billing, public health, mental health and a host of other topics. The course was designed with input from healthcare partners, clinicians, and faculty to provide the best possible outcomes for students.
The course begins on Oct. 26 and can be completed in eight weeks. Students can also choose to enroll in the fifteen-week program beginning on Jan. 18 of next year.
Elizabeth Nassar, director of academic business development at Utica College, said the college’s clinical partners in Florida have indicated that this course is their greatest need. “We know of so many wonderful employees who want to help patients and move to other areas of the hospital, but they simply cannot, because their English skills need to be further developed. The pandemic has made the need for this course even more urgent,” Nassar said.
The cost of the course is $900. If students can gain admission into one of Utica College’s healthcare programs after successful completion of the course, they will be awarded a $450 tuition credit.
The news comes on the heels of the college’s announcement of the IDEAS Grant from the State Department’s Capacity Building Program for U.S. Study Abroad, which is intended to aid students in diversifying their education within the healthcare field.
