Liberal Studies: The UC Advantage

The major in liberal studies is designed for students with a wide array of interests in the liberal arts and sciences, allowing them to pick classes that broaden their knowledge base or further their career goals. Those who might feel confined in a traditional major will relish the opportunity to experience a varied curriculum rooted in the tradition of liberal education.

With the program's strong emphasis on self-motivation, students will be deeply engaged in the process of designing their course of study, working closely with their advisers to ensure continuity and coherency as they pursue their specific academic and/or professional goals.

Students will develop a unique, wide-ranging plan of study which contains courses from three key areas of the liberal arts and sciences:

  • Society and Behavior
  • Art and Language
  • Science and Mathematics
Liberal studies majors are required to complete at least four courses from each of the three key areas. For specific program details, see academic requirements >
