Professor Givens teaches undergraduate courses on homeland security, counterterrorism and emergency management at Utica College. He also teaches graduate courses on critical infrastructure protection, cyber incident management, and network security.

Prior to entering academia in 2011, Austen was a fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, and later worked with the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and on Capitol Hill for two members of Congress. He received a Ph.D. in Public Policy from the Department of Political Economy at King's College London.

Past Research

Austen is co-author of the 2014 book The Business of Counterterrorism: Public-Private Partnerships in Homeland Security, and advises the U.S. military on strategic defense issues.
