Banned Books Read-In
The Frank E Gannett Memorial Library will once again (after a two-year hiatus) present our Banned Books Read-In in Strebel Lounge. National Banned Books Week will be celebrated September 18-24, 2022, and our read-in will take place the following week, on Wednesday, September 28th, between 11:00 am and 3:30 pm. This event was first held on our campus 30 years ago, organized by Utica alumnus and former Professor of PR & Journalism, Kim Landon.
We welcome faculty, staff and students to attend this read-in to browse, to listen, and to participate by reading aloud on stage from a banned or challenged book of their choice. The library will provide a wide selection of books for this purpose, along with sign-in sheets for attendees and readers. Librarians will also be on hand to discuss recent challenges to intellectual freedom in the US, including a new surge of book-bannings that have occurred in the past year.
The message for Banned Books Week 2022 is: Books unite us. Censorship divides us. More info is available at bannedbooksweek.org
