A NEW PROVOST FOR UTICA COLLEGE
A Message from President Casamento
December 19, 2017
I am very pleased to announce that Dr. Todd Pfannestiel will be Utica College’s next Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, effective June 1, 2018. He will succeed Dr. John Johnsen, who will retire in May after 40 years at UC.
Dr. Pfannestiel comes to Utica from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he has distinguished himself in the classroom, through his research and publications, and administratively as Director of Planning, Assessment, and Improvement; Dean of the College of Arts, Education, and Sciences; and currently Interim Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Acting President.
I cannot be more excited to have someone with Dr. Pfannestiel’s experience, talent, and perspective fill the incredible void that Provost Johnsen will leave. During a national search, Dr. Pfannestiel separated himself from a very strong pool of qualified candidates as the right person to be our next chief academic officer. He is a collaborative, confident, and innovative administrator with an exceptional record of achievement and a demonstrated ability to articulate a vision and the path to getting there. More
important, he is a passionate educator who is deeply committed to student-centered teaching, the value of the liberal arts, and high-impact learning.
Dr. Pfannestiel earned his Ph.D. from The College of William and Mary and his B.A. from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He also completed a National Science Foundation graduate research fellowship at Duke University. A historian, his research and writing has focused on a variety of themes, ranging from American civil liberties to the Vietnam War, through the lens of oral history and
I am particularly grateful to the members of the Search Committee for their work in reviewing candidates, organizing finalist visits, and collecting feedback from faculty, staff, trustees, and students.
I hope you will all join me in welcoming Dr. Pfannestiel and his wife Aimee to the Utica College Community.
Dr. Laura M. Casamento
