“The journey of this institution is nothing short of extraordinary.”

Utica College is now Utica University.

President Laura Casamento announced today that the New York State Board of Regents has approved and endorsed the college’s petition to elevate to university status, effective immediately.

“This day is not just about a name change. It represents the culmination of decades-long commitment to strategic growth, academic excellence through innovative programs and curricula, and an unwavering belief in providing incredible, life-changing opportunities to all students through higher education,” said Casamento.

Since its establishment in 1946, Utica has endeavored to grow strategically to meet the higher educational needs of not only the local community, but those students who choose to come here and many of whom make Utica their home.

Utica is among the first private institutions in the state to be granted university status under the updated definition of “university” adopted by the Regents last month.

“The journey of this institution is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Robert Brvenik, chair of the board of trustees. “To that end, I would like to recognize the leadership of President Casamento, my colleagues on the board of trustees, as well as that of past president Dr. Todd Hutton, for their ambitious vision and enduring faith in this institution.”

“In terms of the breadth and depth of our programs, this change is a true reflection of who we are today as an institution,” said Casamento. “This exciting news will strengthen our ability to recruit students and faculty internationally and from other parts of the country.”

With many exciting developments on the horizon, the future looks very bright, Casamento said. Utica has two academic extension sites in New York State, and two operating in Florida. In fact, ground was being broken today for a third site in Pasco County, Florida – coincidentally, happening at the exact same time as this announcement.

“And though it is only just now official on paper, many of us have known it for years: by every measure, Utica is a university,” she said.

The New York State Board of Regents amended definition of university “… means a higher educational institution offering a range of registered undergraduate and graduate curricula in the liberal arts and sciences, including graduate programs registered in at least three of the following discipline areas: agriculture, biological sciences, business, education, engineering, fine arts, health professions, humanities, physical sciences and social sciences.”

Utica offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including doctoral programs in both physical and occupational therapy, MBA in General Management, MBA in Economic Crime and Fraud Management, MBA in Professional Accountancy, as well as a number of masters programs in health administration, nursing and education.

Founded as a branch campus of Syracuse University in 1946, Utica was established to serve veterans, looking to better their lives through higher education, after returning from World War II. Utica received its independent charter in 1995, and currently has more than 33,600 alumni throughout the world.
