
UC's The Tangerine Newspaper Takes Home 3 Prestigious Awards from Syracuse Press Club

This past weekend, The Tangerine, Utica College’s student newspaper, received three awards at the Syracuse Press Club’s annual Professional Recognition Awards ceremony.
Matthew Breault ‘22 won second place in the Best Print News Story category for his article ‘A tale of resilience: Some Utica area food sources narrowly survive COVID-19's wrath,’ Maria Montero Silva ‘20 won second place in the Best Print Feature Story category for her article ‘Addiction in the time of coronavirus: How Covid-19 affects addiction services in Oneida County.’ In addition, Bailey Hryb ‘21 won third place in the Best Print Feature Story for her article ‘Body of teen found in Canastota raises awareness of safety on and off campus.’
Mary Christopher, director of Tangerine operations and instructor of Communication and Media, said, “These three awards put UC at the same award-winning level as student newspapers from Syracuse University and SUNY Oswego.”
“Working on The Tangerine is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring journalists,” Christopher said. “Students from all majors are welcome to participate.”
Founded in 1951, The Syracuse Press Club is comprised of journalists, students, educators and other communications professionals located in the Central New York region. The annual Professional Recognition Awards ceremony highlights outstanding journalism, from print news to radio broadcasts and much more.
