Akemi Reyes 20

"I enjoyed reading about UC online and through pamphlets, but it wasn’t until I visited the campus that I fell in love."

The cybersecurity student talks major changes, finding a “home away from home,” and her favorite spot for sushi near UC.

Name: Akemi Reyes

Class year: 2020

Hometown: Maybrook, NY

Major: Cybersecurity

Number 1 reason you chose UC: I chose UC because it felt like a home away from home. I wanted to go somewhere far from my hometown but not too far, and UC was it for me.

Favorite class: CRJ 333 because it was the class that introduced me to cybersecurity. I used to be a computer science major, but that class made realize that cybersecurity was right for me. I have fallen in love with cybersecurity since and don’t regret changing my major.

Favorite professor: Dr. Leslie Corbo. She is the most compassionate professor I have ever met and truly wants all of her students to succeed. I enjoyed every class with her.

Best part of your college experience so far: Making it onto the Dean’s List. That is an accomplishment that I will never forget. I am a first-generation college student, and that accomplishment wasn’t just for me, it was for my family.

Favorite spot on campus: The lounge in the ECJS Building.

Something about UC most people wouldn't know: Most people wouldn’t know that the organizations at UC are big on community service—whether it’s the Heart Run and Walk, Relay for Life, and even more events that give back to the community.

Favorite thing to do in Utica: My favorite thing to do off-campus is eat at Mitsuba in New Hartford. I love the hibachi there and enjoy going with my friends.

What would you tell a high school senior considering UC? Visit the school and take a tour. I enjoyed reading about UC online and through pamphlets, but it wasn’t until I visited the campus that I fell in love.
