  3. Job Hunting? Here's How to Reflect Utica's New Name on Your Resume

Our experts in the Jeremy C. Thurston '00 Center for Career Readiness offer their advice.

You've heard the big news: Utica College is now Utica University. And if you're a graduate, you may be wondering how to reflect your alma mater's new name on your resume or in other documents required during a job hunt. We checked in with the experts in the Jeremy C. Thurston '00 Center for Career Readiness for some guidance on two common questions:

Job Fair

When will Utica University begin to appear on diplomas and transcripts?

Utica University is recognized by both the New York State Board of Regents and New York State Education Department as a creditable higher education institution. If you are a member of the May 2022 graduating class and future graduating classes, then your diploma and your transcript will bear the Utica University name. Your transcript will delineate the historical context of our name changes on the back.

The most important thing is that the resume is clear, accurate, and truthful.

Should I update my resume with Utica's new name?

If you are an alumnus of Utica College, it is highly recommended to put the new name on your official resume or C.V., but it's not technically incorrect to use the former names, Utica College or Utica College of Syracuse University, as there will always be a record of the school regardless whether it is an old name or a new name. The most important thing is that the resume is clear, accurate, and truthful. To reflect the change from Utica College to Utica University on your resume, it is appropriate to indicate the following, as the designation will be duly recognized:

• Utica University (previously known as (p.n.a) Utica College) or

• Utica College (now known as, (n.k.a) Utica University)

• On certain social media and professional network platforms, you may have to update your profile manually (e.g., LinkedIn).

For employers, they can simply call the school’s Registrar's Office to verify a person’s academic credentials.
