  3. Innovation and Real-World Problem Solving: Graduate Student Ashham Saleel
Ashham Saleel speaks in front of UN general Assembly

"I chose Utica University because it is committed to nurturing innovation and real-world problem-solving."

As students return to Utica’s snowy campus for the start of the Spring semester, many do so traveling very far from home.

International enrollment of students has grown considerably in recent years and just this spring, 50 international students joined the university from more than a dozen countries, including Nepal, Pakistan, Japan, India, Vietnam, Spain, and the United Kingdom, among others.

With a current total of 178 international students now calling Utica home, each one brings with them their own story.

Ashham Saleel is one of those students, pursuing a graduate degree in Business Analytics through Utica’s MBA program.

Utica Magazine recently sat down with Saleel to discuss his journey and aspirations.

Utica Magazine: Could you tell us a little about yourself?

Ashham Saleel in a chair, looking at the camera and smiling.

Ashham Saleel: I’m originally from Kerala, a state known as "God's Own Country" in India, famous for its scenic beauty and vibrant traditions. I have worked with leading global companies like the London Stock Exchange, Amazon, Microsoft, and EY. In 2017, I was honored to be a winner of the United Nations' ‘Many Languages One World' International Essay Contest, which led me to represent India at the UN General Assembly. I was even fortunate enough to address the Assembly—a life changing experience. Outside of my professional endeavors, I'm deeply passionate about AI, data analytics, and how these technologies can shape the future. I also find immense joy in traveling and learning from diverse cultures, which fuels my personal and professional growth.

UM: What made you choose Utica University?

AS: I chose Utica University because it is committed to nurturing innovation and real-world problem-solving. The unique combination empowers me to not only master data analysis and technology but also develop the leadership skills needed to turn insights into consequential business decisions.

UM: What are your post-graduate plans/objectives?

AS: After graduation, I aim to pursue leadership roles where I can leverage data analytics to drive growth and business efficiency. My ultimate goal is to play a key role in shaping India's thriving analytics ecosystem, fostering a culture of technology and innovation in businesses that will have a lasting impact.
