  3. 42nd Annual Utica College Regional Science Fair to Determine Best of the Best Middle, High School Scientists
Stages of a plant experiment.

The fair will be held virtually beginning March 27, with several live online events.

What is the effect of acid rain on plants? How can you make a cloud in a bottle? How smart are guinea pigs?

These are just a few of the burning questions on the minds of tomorrow’s scientists; these and many more will be answered by middle and high school students throughout the region at this weekend’s 42nd Annual Utica College Regional Science Fair.

The fair will be held virtually beginning March 27, with several live online events. Jessica Thomas, associate professor of biology and director of the science fair, will provide opening remarks, as will Sharon Wise, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and distinguished professor of biology at UC.

The keynote will be given Amanda Saravia-Butler, bioinformatics lead scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. A 2009 graduate of UC, Saravia-Butler went on to earn her doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from Mayo Graduate School. She also leads an international COVID-19 research team.

The judging of student projects will take place asynchronously; students are required to submit photos and videos of their projects. Categories include physical science, natural science, mathematics, engineering and computer science in both junior (grades 7-8) and senior (grades 9-12) levels. Eight schools are participating with a total of 48 students competing for a wide range of prizes.

The senior level grand champion will win a half-tuition scholarship to Utica College for two years. The senior level grand champion will also be supported by the UC Regional Science Fair to compete in the 2021 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), which is slated to be held virtually.

Judging will be completed by March 30. A list of winners will be released next week.
