Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony
Frequently Asked Questions

The undergraduate commencement ceremony will be on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at 3:30p.m. at the Adirondack Bank Center at the Utica Memorial Auditorium (400 Oriskany Street West, Utica NY 13502). There will be a reception immediately following the ceremony on the campus of Utica College. In good weather, the reception will be on the quad. In inclement weather, it will be relocated indoors. Signs will be posted.
At Utica College, commencement is a ceremony held each May for students who completed their degree requirements and applied to receive their degree in the previous December or will do so in May, August, or December of the current academic year.

You may only participate in one commencement ceremony.

You should apply for your degree according to when you will complete ALL requirements, including all classes, internships, and student teaching. Do not apply for May just because you wish to participate in commencement.
All students wishing to participate in the May commencement ceremony MUST submit an online Undergraduate Application for Degree no later than March 15, regardless of the semester in which they anticipate completing their degree requirements (still select the appropriate graduation date – December, May, or August).  Don’t forget to submit the commencement participation form, too!

I am doing an internship/student teaching in Fall 2018. Can I walk in the May 2018 ceremony?
YES. You are welcome to participate in the May 2018 ceremony. You just need to:
  1. Apply for a December 2018 degree no later than March 15, 2018 (don't apply for a May degree!)
  2. Submit the commencement participation form by March 15
  3. Submit the Permission to Walk form by March 15. If you do not submit this form by March 15, your name will not be included in the program. You are still welcome to participate in the ceremony, but the program will have already been sent to be printed.
Yes, students wishing to participate in the undergraduate commencement ceremony MUST notify Utica College of this intention by submitting the Commencement Participation form by the March 15 deadline.  Failure to RSVP by the deadline means a student will NOT be allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony.

December 2018 graduates wanting to participate in the ceremony should submit the participation form and the Permission to Walk form by March 15.

How do I obtain documentation for my family, who lives in another country, to attend?

If you have family that lives in another country and would like to attend your commencement ceremony, Utica College can send you a letter for documentation purposes.  If you need such a letter, please email Dan O'Toole, Director of International Programs, with your name and program of study as well as the name of the person(s) needing to enter the United States to attend commencement and their relationship to you.

What are Latin Honors?

Latin Honors are a recognition of students who have excelled in their undergraduate course work. There are three criteria that must be met for Latin Honors:
  1. Cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher and
  2. Minimum of 60 credits earned at Utica College and
  3. Minimum of 30 credits earned at Utica College at the 300 level or higher.
Cum Laude: 3.4 - 3.59
Magna Cum Laude: 3.6 - 3.79
Summa Cum Laude: 3.8 - 4.0

Final determination of eligibility for Latin Honors is done at the time your degree is conferred.

I think I will have earned Latin Honors. What do I need to do?

  • At commencement, if you are eligible for Latin Honors, you will be given a gold tassel when you pick up your name card.
  • Please wear only ONE tassel.
  • If you think you should have a gold tassel, but you haven't been given one, please come to the Registrar's table.
  • Possession of a gold tassel does not guarantee that the student will earn Latin Honors.
  • Final/official determination of Latin Honors will be calculated after all grades are in and your degree is awarded. Honors will be printed on your transcript and diploma.

Degree candidates and their guests are strongly encouraged to park on campus and use the complimentary shuttle service to and from the Aud in order to avoid expected parking congestion and parking fees.  Buses will leave every few minutes from the circle in front of the Strebel Student Center on campus, beginning at 2:00 p.m., and will return to campus following the ceremony.

The LAST BUS will leave Utica College at 3:00p.m. This bus will likely be very full.

Students participating in the ceremony MUST arrive at the Aud no later than 3:00 p.m.
Students and their guests should expect the ceremony to last up to two hours; students CANNOT leave the ceremony early. Please make travel and dining arrangements accordingly.
Undergraduate students can order their cap and gown online. Click here to go to that form.

You must arrange pickup or shipment of your regalia with the Bookstore.

If you are graduating with honors, you will receive the gold tassel the morning of commencement at the Aud when you pick up your name card.

No. Utica College has changed vendors as well as the color of the robes and mortarboard cap.

Where can I pick up my yearbook?

You will be able to pick up your yearbook at Student Activities when everything arrives (usually three weeks before graduation).

Where can I pick up my announcements?

You will be able to pick up your announcements (2 formal, 6 informal) at the bookstore when you pick up your cap and gown. You may request more announcements at Student Activities, and if there are extras, you may receive them.

All announcements have information about the commencement ceremony and the College Seal. On the formal announcements, the College Seal is embossed (raised), and they are folded, like a greeting card, where the student may wish to write a message to the recipient. On the informal announcements, the College Seal is flat and it is printed on a flat (not folded) card.
Nursing pins and stoles are ordered through the Commencement Participation Form.
The deadline to order a Nursing pin for ABSN students is March 9.
The deadline to order a Nursing pin for all other Nursing students is March 23.
The deadline to order a stole is March 13.
There are NO tickets for the undergraduate commencement ceremony at the current time.

Is there a limit to the number of guests I may bring?

You may have as many people come to commencement 2018 at the Aud as you would like. This policy may be updated for future events.

My guest (or I) require special assistance. Where can I inquire about accommodations?

If you or any of your guests need special assistance, please submit a Special Needs Request.
A professional photographer will be present to take photographs of all degree candidates as they walk across the stage.  A link to these photographs will be sent to each student’s UC e-mail address within 72 hours of the ceremony, and the pictures will be available for purchase on the photographer's website. There is no obligation to order copies of these photos.

If you do not receive this e-mail, send an e-mail to commencement@utica.edu with your name.
Degree candidates and their guests are also welcome to take photographs during the ceremonies, but please keep in mind that there are safety regulations regarding keeping aisles clear. We ask that you take any photos from your seat; guests will not be allowed on the floor of the Auditorium.

Where should I leave my purse/backpack?
Please leave purses (or other personal items) with a friend or family member. If you bring personal items to the ceremony, you must carry them into the ceremony.
If you have additional questions, you may contact the commencement committee at commencement@utica.edu.
