HSSS Student Speaker Series Presents: Eating Disorders - The Hidden Epidemic

Executive Profile
Kaitlyn Egan is a junior Health Sciences-Physical Therapy major. She is the secretary of the Health Sciences Student Society, as well as the Vice President of the Utica College Dance Company, President of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, and a member of the innovation team of the school of Health Professions and Education (HPE). She also works on campus as an admissions ambassador. Kaitlyn presented at the 2019 Health Sciences Student Society Conference about the importance of optimal digestion and food combining. Through the course HLS 301: Introduction to Healthcare Advocacy and Navigation, she was provided with another opportunity to pursue an advocacy project based on something she is passionate about - education, prevention, and treatment of eating disorders. Through her time as a competitive dancer and college student, she has witnessed many cases and struggled with disordered eating of her own, inspiring this presentation.
Presentation Description
Kaitlyn will give an overview of the different types of eating disorders and discuss the current barriers to diagnosing them, including insufficient research, comorbidities, and biases. She will introduce possible solutions to these problems as well. With such a widespread, but hidden problem in our society, this information will benefit many.
