WUTR: Students continue to show interest in journalism

In an era where the term "fake news" is becoming more mainstream, you would think young people may shy away from the journalism profession.
But some journalism schools are showing the opposite effects.
"There's never been a shortage of politicians wanting to target the media, complain about the media," says Utica College Professor of Journalism and Former Producer for NBC News David Chanatry. "I think everybody who's ever been in the White House has done that to some extent.
Though it's nothing new, Chanatry says the negativity surrounding journalism has changed in some ways.
"This is different now, in more modern time. What we're seeing now is different because the rhetoric is more heated than it has been, certainly. And the social media world that we live in multiplies that."
But even with that type of rhetoric, students all across the country, including at Utica College, continue to show interest in becoming a journalist.
