Utica, NY (10/18/2005) - Area civil rights activist and leader Barrie Gewanter will speak about free speech in America at Utica College next week.

Gewanter’s talk, “Is Free Speech Still An American Passion?” will address how the government is treating dissenting free speech through changes in law and policy, domestic surveillance, and crowd control. She will also discuss how the act of dissenting free speech is looked upon by many as unpatriotic. The talk will take place Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 11:30 a.m. in the Utica College Library Concourse. It is free and open to the public.

The college is also hosting a photo journal display, “Faces of Liberty,” which chronicles the journeys of people standing up to the government for their civil rights. This exhibit, on display in the Frank E. Gannett Library, is sponsored by the ACLU. The public is welcome to view the display before and after Gewanter’s talk.

Gewanter has been director of the CNY chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union since December, 2002. She currently coordinates the CNY Bill of Rights Defense Campaign and its efforts to educate the community in opposition of the PATRIOT Act. In October 2004, Gewanter received the Peacemaker Award from Peace Action of Central New York. A graduate of Webster University in St. Louis, Mo., she earned a master’s degree in sociology from Washington University in St. Louis. Gewanter has worked as a community activist, fighting for women’s rights, gay and lesbian rights, workplace health and safety, economic justice, civil rights, and civil liberties. She has been actively involved in the ACLU for more than eight years.

Gewanter’s talk is part of the college’s yearlong academic theme, “Dissent in a Free Society.”
