11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Barrie Gewanter, Director of the Central New York chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union (the New York affiliate of the ACLU), will give a talk on free speech and provide an introduction to the NYCLU's"Faces of Liberty" exhibit, on display at the Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library through October 27.

A graduate of Webster University with a Master's in sociology from Washington University, Ms. Gewanter has been a longtime community activist, focusing on women's rights, gay and lesbian rights, workplace health and safety, labor issues, economic justice, civil rights, and civil liberities.  She has been recognized by the Human Rights Commission of Syracuse and Onondaga County for her work on the Living Wage campaign and other social justice issues. Ms. Gewanter currently coordinates the NYCLU's Central New York Bill of Rights Defense Campaign.

As part of this year's Campus Theme, Dissent In A Free Society, Ms. Gewanter will give a talk entitled "Is Free Speech Still An American Passion?" at 11:30 a.m. in Utica College's Library Concourse, with discussion to follow. She will then invite young people to view the "Faces of Liberty" exhibit.
