Utica, NY (12/03/2013) - The Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program (YSLPP) is receiving a unique donation this month from a local musician. Mark Werchowski, songwriter and musician, will donate all the proceeds from purchases this month of his holiday song, “Christmas in the Valley,” to the Young Scholars Program.

The song, first released in 1991, has become a local favorite during the holiday season. In 2002, a music video was created with scenes from Utica and outlying towns that are mentioned in “Christmas in the Valley.’ In 2011, the song was re-launched with a music video in commemoration of its 20th anniversary.

Flossie Mitchell, YSLPP director, said, “This is the first time someone has come to us with this type of donation, it is an exciting time for the Young Scholars and this will hopefully benefit many of the programs that we do for our students.”

The Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program is a collaborative project between Utica College and the Utica City School District that was launched in 1993 in Utica. The multi-year program was designed by the school district and college officials to meet the challenge of motivating teenage students to stay in school and earn a New York State Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, and pursue post-secondary education.

The song is $1 and will be available through the first of the year. To purchase the song “Christmas in the Valley,” visit mvchristmassong.com.
