Utica, NY (07/30/2007) - The Utica College parking lot will look a bit different this Saturday (August 4). Instead of the customary cars and trucks belonging to the faculty, staff and students, there will be dozens of motorcycles starting their engines for the 15th annual March of Dimes ride to save babies (RIDE).

According to Dr. Eve Lackritz of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, premature birth is the leading cause of developmental disability in children, sometimes resulting in cerebral palsy and mental retardation. The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality, said Mark Kovacs, director of alumni and parent relations at Utica College, who has participated in the local ride for eight years. With the help of friends and colleagues, last year’s ride raised more than $100,000.

Participating riders from the numerous central N.Y. locations will meet up at the State Fairgrounds in Syracuse for food, live music and door prizes. UC is the local starting point for participating area residents.

“The March of Dimes Bikers for Babies motorcycle ride is a great way to get involved and help the March of Dimes in the fight against premature birth and birth defects,” added Mark Santa Maria, audio-visual support specialist at UC. He has been involved with the campaign for three years and has produced television public service announcements for the local ride. “It’s a great ride for a great cause,” Santa Maria added.

The March of Dimes’ RIDE is one of the major fundraisers for the non-profit organization. Sign-ups for the event will take place at Utica College on Saturday, August 4 at 9 a.m. and the ride begins at 10 a.m., rain or shine. To make a donation or to join the ride to save babies’ lives, visit www.marchofdimesride.org.
