Utica, NY (04/18/2006) - The field of genetics is changing rapidly. How will this affect our everyday lives? What role can the public play in shaping policies on genetics research and testing?

Utica College will host an interactive lecture about genetics and society on Wednesday, April 26, at 4:30 p.m. in the Library Concourse. It is free and open to the public.

Joan Scott, deputy director of the Genetics and Public Policy Center in Washington, D.C., will give a lecture titled, “Your Role in Shaping Public Policy in the Genetics Era.” She will discuss the emerging role of genetics in medicine; the ethical, legal, and moral issues this technology raises; and why the public needs to weigh in on policy debates. Public discussion will follow the lecture.

Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and zoology from Kent State University, and a master’s degree in human genetics from Sarah Lawrence College. She holds certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics, subspecializing in genetic counseling. Scott was previously the director of the biorepository at Gene Logic Inc., a genomics company, and general manager and director of genetic services at a clinical diagnostic lab. With more than 25 years of experience in clinical genetics, the biotechnology industry, and genetic policy, she has been instrumental in setting certification standards for genetic counselors while serving on the American Board of Genetic Counseling.

The lecture is sponsored by Ferre Institute, Inc., Binghamton; Mohawk Valley Genetic Services, New Hartford; and Utica College.
