Utica, NY (03/28/2006) - Utica College will showcase the works of fiber artist Victoria Mele Zacek in the Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery throughout the month of April.Through the processes of weaving, deconstruction of images and reconstructed weavings, Zacek displays three generations of life and transition in UC’s first M.F.A. (master of fine arts) Syracuse graduate thesis exhibition.
The works of art incorporate Zacek’s personal life. Pieces include an aluminum casting of her arms and those of her three children, holding a weaving made from her late husband’s silk shirt. Zacek will also exhibit a chronology of the last 18 days of her father’s life through portraits composed of inter-woven drawings and fibers.
Zacek’s exhibit also connects her personal life with her community ties in Utica. Her father, Edward Mele, was president of Mele Manufacturing located in the 450,000-square foot Erie Street complex, originally built by the Utica Knitting Company in 1904.
However, with the business shifting to the importation rather than the manufacture of jewelry boxes, the building was sold in 2004 and deconstruction began. Zacek visited the site during demolition and took many photographs that depict the deconstruction and recycling of her family’s business.
The exhibit opens Sunday, April 2, with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Library Concourse, adjacent to the gallery. It is free and open to the public. It can also be viewed Monday through Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. through May 2. For more information, visit www.utica.edu/gallery.
