Leising to Release New Book of Poems

Utica, NY (07/11/2013) - Gary Leising, associate professor of English at Utica College, can add another published book to his ever-growing list of accomplishments. “Temple of Bones,” Leising’s second published chapbook, is a collection of 24 poems with a variety of characters, scenarios and ironies.

With an improbable approach, Leising writes of unlikely characters and situations and makes paralleling connections to human mortality and human experience. Characters such as a duck who explores the world and situations such as an archeologist who wants to date a ghost, assist Leising in making those connections. “The absurd allows me to create different ways to write,” said Leising. “It also allows me to write most like myself.”

The book’s cover art depicts a mysterious box of cat bones, photographed by Thomas McCarthy, professor of biology at UC. The photo reflects one of the themes of the book: a body is like a temple, but in actuality is just bones.

Leising’s previous published works include  “Fastened to a Dying Animal,” “Toenails Diary” and “The Alp at the End of My Street,” which won the 2013 Brick Road Poetry Prize. His work has also appeared in many literary journals and his poems have been featured on the National Public Radio daily show called “The Writer’s Almanac.” Leising’s full-length collection of poems, “The Alp at the End of My Street,” will be published in 2014.

Leising joined the UC faculty in August of 2005 and currently teaches introductory and advanced level creative writing courses. His academic accomplishments include a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Dayton, a master of fine arts in creative writing from the University of South Carolina and a doctorate in English from the University of Cincinnati. Along with creating his own literary works, Leising advises for the Ampersand, UC’s journal of art and literature.
