Utica, NY (03/20/2012) - Utica College will host its second annual high school cybersecurity career day on Wednesday, March 21, from 9:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. Ninety students from Rome Free Academy, Proctor High School and other local districts have been selected by their teachers or guidance counselors to attend the event based on their demonstrated interest and skill in science, math, and computer classes.Participating students will have an opportunity to talk with current cybersecurity professionals in law enforcement, defense and commercial organizations about the types of jobs available and the skills and education required to obtain them.
Later in the morning, students will participate in two breakout sessions, choosing from presentations on cryptography, data hiding and digital forensics. There will also be a panel discussion with UC faculty and students highlighting the college’s cybersecurity programs.
The available slots for students filled quickly, a sign that the cybersecurity field is growing at unbelievable pace from its near non-existence just a decade or two ago.
Joe Giordano, chair of cybersecurity, says that because the field is truly up and coming, skilled workers are in high demand.
Utica College has been a pioneer in cybersecurity education, offering a bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity and information assurance, and the nation’s first online master’s degree in cybersecurity-intelligence and forensics.
