Utica, NY (04/14/2011) - Players of Utica and Utica College have teamed up to present the timeless classic, award winning THE LION IN WINTER by James Goldman at Strebel Auditorium. This comedic drama is the fourth installment of the Players of Utica 2010-2011 Subscription Season.

Seasoned Players of Utica actor/director Thom Capozzella has been working with local actors and Utica College students since January to bring this production to the stage. The cast includes local actress/director Maerilee Ensign as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Michael Schuyler as Henry II, King of England, along with Catherine Presite, Tim Huey, Adam Spiridilozzi, James Davall,  and UC students Mranda McKee and Jeff Percacciante.

THE LION IN WINTER is a comedic drama of palace intrigue, filled with biting and witty humor. It concerns King Henry II of England, his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and their three sons – Richard, Geoffrey and John – all of whom want to succeed their aging (but still vital) father. Along with Philip, the young king of France, and his sister Alais, Henry’s mistress, the royal family form alliances and betray each other by turns as they scheme for the crown.

The sets and costumes have been created to deliver a truly beautiful and historic environment. Nearly 60 Utica College students and community volunteers have come together to design and build a remarkable set and sew incredible costumes for this production. For many, this is their first experience. Audience members will be amazed, not only the talent on the stage, but by the talent behind the scenes that made this production possible.

The play premiered on March 3, 1966 and was presented again as a revival in 1999 with Laurence Fishburne and Stockard Channing in the lead roles. The 1968 film version featured Peter O’Toole, Katherine Hepburn and a young Anthony Hopkins. Ms. Hepburn won an Academy Award for her portrayal of “Eleanor”. The 1999 made-for-television movie starred Glenn Close and Patrick Stewart as the lead characters.

THE LION IN WINTER runs April 14, 15, 16 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on April 17 at 2 p.m. Tickets will also be available at the door. Experience it live! For tickets and reservations, call 315-724-4000. Seating may be limited and reservations are strongly encouraged.
