Utica, NY (11/23/2010) - On Monday, Dec. 6, James Zogby will be at Utica College to discuss the Arab world as documented in his newly-released book, Arab Voices: What They Are Saying to Us, and Why it Matters, published by Palgrave Macmillan in October.
The talk is sponsored by UC’s School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business and Justice Studies, the School of Health Professions and Education, as well as the school’s Diversity Committee and the James Sherman Society. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Economic Crime and Justice Studies Auditorium.

According to Barnes & Noble, Arab Voices asks the questions, collects the answers, and shares the results that will help people relieve many of the myths, assumptions, and biases that hold individuals back from understanding the Arab world. In it, Zogby introduces a new comprehensive poll that allows policy and perception to be more accurately based on the real world. His talk, which features the same title as the book, will delve into those results and conclusions.

For the past three decades, Zogby has been involved in a full range of Arab-American issues. A co-founder and chairman of the Palestine Human Rights Campaign in the late 1970s, he later co-founded and served as the executive director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. In 1982, he co-founded Save Lebanon, Inc., a private non-profit, humanitarian and non-sectarian relief organization which funds health care for Palestinian and Lebanese victims of war, and other social welfare projects in Lebanon. In 1985, Zogby founded Arab American Institute (AAI), a Washington, D.C.-based organization that serves as the political and policy research arm of the Arab American community, of which he remains president.

Zogby currently serves on the national advisory board of the American Civil Liberties Union, The Human Rights Watch Board of Directors for the Middle East and North Africa and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In addition, he is a senior advisor for the polling firm Zogby International, founded by his brother and native Utican John Zogby. He writes a weekly column, “Washington Watch,” which is currently published in 14 Arab and South Asian countries. Since 2001 he has also hosted the award-winning program “Viewpoint with James Zogby,” featured on Abu Dhabi Television, LinkTV, Dish Network, and DirecTV.

Zogby earned a bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College, and his doctorate from Temple University's department of religion. He was a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow at Princeton University in 1976. In 1995, Le Moyne awarded Zogby an honorary doctoral of laws degree, and in 1997 named him the college's outstanding alumnus.

Following the talk, Zogby will entertain questions from the audience, as well as sign copies of his book, which are available for purchase in the college’s Barnes & Noble bookstore. The event is free and open to the public, and refreshments will be served.
