Utica, NY (09/02/2010) - The Utica College Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery will begin its 30th year with “ African Masquerade and the Collector’s Dilemma,” featuring masks from the collection of one of UC’s distinguished professors and founding members of the gallery, Emeritus Professor of Biology William H. Gotwald Jr.

“Gotwald’s collection will display original masks, cultural meaning and masquerading traditions, providing a view into pre and post contact African and South Pacific cultural traditions with a walk-through environment rich in textures, colors and styles,” said Carolynne Whitefeather, director of the gallery.

Gotwald will give a collector’s talk at the exhibit’s opening reception in the gallery on Monday, Sept. 6; the reception will take place from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibit runs Sept. 6 through 29, and is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 12 to 3 p.m.

"Bill played an important role among a group of professors who proposed the gallery and saw it become a reality in 1980," Whitefeather said.

Gotwald will return to the UC campus Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 12:30 pm to speak about his collection, as part of the college’s Professor Harry F. and Mary Ruth Jackson Lunch Hour Series.

This exhibit is the first of seven to be featured this academic year in the Barrett Fine Art Gallery, which focuses on bringing individual artists and artist groups to campus and the regional community.
