Utica, NY (04/16/2010) - The Utica College Student Gerontology Society and Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders (SHINE) hosted a Health Fair yesterday (April 14) for nearly 200 refugees from the Mohawk Valley Resource Center for Refugees. The group came to campus to listen to presentations by UC students on a variety of health care topics, ranging from the importance of immunizations to staying more active. Information on how to access services was also made available to the area’s newest residents."Our annual Health Fair is so important to our area refugees, especially in the ways we involve them in helping to educate their children about health practices. We could not offer it if not for the generous support of both time and money that we receive from our local MetLife organization,” said Darlene Heian, assistant professor and director of gerontology at Utica College. “MetLife has been a continuing supporter of our SHINE program and also sponsors a new, off-campus program in which we work with older female Karen refugees at the Tabernacle Baptist Church."
The annual event continues to grow, Heian said, taking on added importance as the area’s refugee population increases.
