Utica, NY (04/28/2010) - Utica College will unveil its gift from the class of 2008 on Friday, April 30 at 3 p.m. on the lawn in front of Addison Miller White Hall. The class elected to commission a sculpture as its gift to the college, working with the Art on the Run organization. Steven Specht, professor of psychology, created the piece, “Runner With A Heart,” representing both Utica College and the spirit of America’s Greatest Heart Run and Walk.
Specht, a member of the National Collage Society, has been recognized across the country for his work. He will be present at the unveiling to discuss the imagery and symbolism in the piece. For example, the runner’s number is the numeral “8,” representing the class of 2008 and is painted in “Utica College orange.” What looks like a tribal tattoo on the upper arm is actually three significant years in the history of Utica College (1933, 1946 and 1995). The heart decoupaged on the runner’s chest symbolizes UC’s involvement with the Heart Run and Walk.
A reception will be held immediately following in the lobby of the Economic Crime and Justice Studies Building. The event is free and open to the public.
