Utica, NY (05/14/2009) -     Utica College will celebrate its 60th Commencement Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 17 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. This year’s ceremony will feature 450 undergraduate and 206 graduate honorees; this includes those students who completed degree requirements throughout the year.
Former Commander of Joint Task Force Katrina Lieutenant General Russel L. Honoré will deliver the commencement speech. The three-star general will share his personal experiences on the cleanup following Hurricane Katrina and discuss preparedness, organization and leadership with the graduating class.
“Most of the students graduating this May began their academic careers at Utica College in late August 2005, precisely when Hurricane Katrina was disturbing our country,” said Paul Lehmann, director of student activities. “Throughout their four-year college career, they have been able to see how the government handled the clean-up and restoration of New Orleans. We believe Honoré will deliver an insightful speech that will relate to the students. Not only will they learn more about the events that took place after the storm, but will also take away strategies about being prepared and organized that will help upon graduation.”
Allison Dibble of Selkirk, N.Y. will be honored as the class valedictorian. The health studies major plans to continue her education at Utica College where she will begin to pursue a master’s degree in occupational therapy. Sheri Fedor of Sauquoit, N.Y. and Jessica Leclerc of Augusta, Maine were selected as the class salutatorians. Fedor earned her degree in health studies while Laclerc carried a dual major in therapeutic recreation and psychology. Each candidate will graduate with a 3.97 grade point average, but Dibble obtained more Utica College credit hours to earn the top honor.
