Utica, NY (09/25/2006) - The 12th Annual Banned Books Read-In at Utica College will feature nationally syndicated columnist Leonard Pitts, Jr.
The read-in will take place in Strebel Student Center Lounge on the college campus from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28. Students, faculty and staff will read excerpts and works that have been challenged, banned or restricted to recognize the importance of the First Amendment. The read-in is held in conjunction with National Banned Books Week, which takes place this week, Sept. 23-30.
Immediately following the read-in, award winning columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. will discuss the issue of censorship. Pitts is a nationally syndicated columnist that writes on the topics of racism, current events, and human rights. He writes regularly for the Miami Herald and recently authored the book, Becoming a Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood.
For more than 25 years, banned book read-ins have been held across the country. The American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom first hosted a Banned Book Read-In in 1984. More information about banned, challenged and restricted books can be found on the American Library Association Web site at www.ala.org/bbooks.
