Linear Equations and Inequalities, Quadratic Functions, Exponential Functions, Logarithmic Functions, Mathematics of Finance, Probability.

COURSE LEARNING GOALS: In accordance to the learning goals of the Department of Mathematics of Utica College, MAT 143 will introduce and reinforce students' ability of formulating and solving mathematical problems with its applications.

ATTENDANCE:
In a mathematics course, attendance is very important, and each lecture builds on the previous lecture.  You are to attend all classes.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed.  The final grade in this course will be reduced by a letter if one is absent more than twice.  Please let me know if you have any excused absences.  Come to class few minutes before the class starts.

HOMEWORK: You will be expected to do the problems and exercises soon after the material is covered in the lecture.  The problems are the key to mastering the course.  Please, DO THEM.  Homework assignments must be neatly written with all details.  This will be a gateway test and it allows you to have a PASSPORT to take in class tests.

EXAMS:   There will be three tests and a comprehensive final exam, to see that you are keeping up with the work.  The final exam will cover the entire course.  In general I do not give makeup tests (except under some extraordinary conditions and with my prior approval) but I drop the lowest or missing test except for the final exam.  For three in class tests,  solving these homework problems will be  gateway test and it allows  you to have a passport to take in class tests.

DETERMINATION OF FINAL GRADE:

         2 tests out of 3 tests               70%

         Final Exam                              30%

GRADING SYSTEM:

                          A 93 100,    A  90 92,

Relax and trust me. I will help you.

MY GOAL:  This semester, my goal is to end up this course without any For D grade on my grade sheet.  Would you please help me to reach this goal?  You must spend at least three or four hours a week beyond the class time.  Think about that.

CELL PHONE:  Please turn off your cell phone in this class.  Thanks!

CLASSROOM:  To have a wonderful learning environment and a pleasant class, please respect your fellow students in the classroom.  Disruptive behavior is not acceptable.  I like to see your happy face during the semester and when you get the report card after finals.
