Making a Good Impression: 8 Job Fair Tips

Making a Good Impression: Job Fair Tips

With more than 50 employers in attendance, today's Job and Internship Fair at Utica College is the perfect place for UC students to network with company reps, share their resumes, and learn more about potential careers. But how can a student make the best first impression? We asked a handful of company representatives for some tips:

“Be friendly. A smile goes a long way.” —Nicole Crever ’09, Walgreens

“Ask questions, but also go in with some knowledge. If you’re interested in a certain company, do your research in advance.” —Laura Hunter, Mohawk Valley Health System

“Be yourself. That helps the company figure out if you’re a good fit for their culture.” —Eric Gonzalez ’10, Symantec Corporation

“Present yourself well. Don’t come in sweats!” —Jennifer Montana and Faith Wohlrab, Masonic Care Community

“Keep an open mind. Don’t write off a company because you think they don’t have positions in your field. You might be surprised.” —Valerie Wasielewski, Chobani

“Be open to different roles at a company. The first step is getting your foot in the door.” —Lisa Colangelo, Herkimer Area Resource Center

"Make eye contact, introduce yourself, and speak clearly. With lots of people around, it can be hard to hear, so be sure you're speaking loudly and clearly." —Lesley Wallace, Utica College

“Don’t pronounce it ‘Peace Corpse.’” —Douglas Miller, Peace Corps

On March 8th from 1-3pm in the Library Concourse, 50 employers will be on campus to recruit students for job and internship opportunities.  Students should dress professionally and bring resumes to distribute. Free professional head shots for LinkedIn/UC Career Connect accounts will be provided, and students are eligible to win one of two $150 gift cards to Amazon.com.
