Utica, NY (03/04/2013)
- Beginning this fall, Utica College will offer “themed” housing for first-year students, in an effort to help them assimilate and feel more comfortable as they adjust to college life and living away from home.

There will be four themes focusing on creativity, challenging yourself, healthy living and discovery of ones’ own interests. Residential students sharing the same theme will be housed together in either the North or South residence halls, but the programming will be made available to a number of commuter students, too.

UCreate is designed for students who are interested in living and working with creative and performing artists on campus and in the community. ULive is for students who are interested in biology and the sciences. UBalance is geared toward students who wish to join a dynamic community that is focused on health, wellness and better living. UDiscover appeals to students who wish to meet fellow pioneers and start exploring the world of learning and opportunity, as well as those who have not yet decided on a major.

“Themed housing students will be grouped with other new students with similar interests, and will also be working with a faculty/staff mentor who is also interested in the same things,” said Derek Pooley, area coordinator for first-year students. “I think that it’s a program that will make the first-year students more comfortable when coming to campus,” said Pooley, “as well as help familiarize them with many of the great things this area has to offer.”

Group activities will include social and cultural field trips to local museums and shows, nature hikes, as well as trips to the Adirondack Mountains for activities ranging from kayaking to skiing and snowboarding and more.

If you are interested in learning more about themed housing or would like to suggest a venue for a themed activity, please contact Pooley at dkpooley@utica.edu or at (315) 792-3285.
