- UTICA, NY (10/27/09) – The Utica College football team will participate in its first annual “Helmets for Hunger” project this week to benefit those less fortunate in the Mohawk Valley. The Pioneers will be collecting $1 from each player, coach and football staff member on the team. The money raised will be used to buy Thanksgiving dinner for one needy family in the Mohawk Valley.
“I think this is a great project we have set up and I can’t wait to see the smiling faces of the family that we are able to buy Thanksgiving dinner for,” said second year Head Coach Blaise Faggiano. “As we get closer to the holidays it is always important to take a step back from the football field for a moment to help those that are less fortunate.”
The staff will set up collection boxes in the locker room as well as the meeting rooms in an effort to raise as much money as possible. After the season is done, the team’s leadership council will buy food from a local grocery store and deliver the food to a needy family.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday for their final home game of the 2009 season when they take on Empire 8 Conference rival Hartwick College. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Visit www.ucpioneers.com for links to live video, audio and stats.
